Meow Wolf (Denver) Review

Despite having encountered Meow Wolf in my work a number of times I truly didn't have a sense of what the experience was going to be and perhaps that's the best way to go into a wildly ambitious attraction that is bound to ask more questions before giving any answers. Let's start with the verdict: Meow Wolf is great!

We found ourselves without much to do in Denver after a canceled concert came last minute but were curious to see the city as none of us had been before. Aside from the obvious tourist things to do, we weren't staying very long and everything seemed so far away but having heard about Meow Wolf I figured it would be at least a good idea to check out. My intention is not to give away what exactly Meow Wolf is in this post, you can find that readily somewhere else. Instead, I'll give my impressions in a non-spoiler way.

Firstly, it's gorgeous, my initial thought was that this was just some big installation where people can go to take Instagram photos and that's not too untrue. It is that but it isn't only that. Three floors of lavish. larger than life and mind-boggling installations that each have their own identity and ample room to find corners and spaces with hidden details that would be gorgeous to snap away at. It was quite busy when we went and aside from a few moments, it felt so big that we weren't really bothered by other people exploring the large spaces. The other part of Meow Wolf is an interactive game that is optional to explore through. Hidden in the installations is a complex lore and mystery that binds the entire experience together. "Meow Wolf" isn't just the name of the installation and upon playing the game the context of where you are and what it means becomes more clear (and less clear!) The game kept us busy for about three hours, we got lost, accidentally discovered things, took our time and unraveled secrets, and still didn't complete the experience (We came close but went late and came against closing time).

In the end, our feet were tired but our imaginations were filled and our appetites for more Meow Wolf were whetted.

Anyone in Denver who hasn't gone already or has only gone for the aesthetics should consider going back and getting immersed in the adventure, it's well worth the time, energy, and money.
